GENERAL OVERVIEW
The first Project Annual Meeting took place in the beautiful setting of the city of Alghero, the Riviera del Corallo (Coral Coast), on the northwest coast of Sardinia, during the 5th month since the project start date. The Meeting was co-organized by all project partners and in collaboration with the members of the project Advisory and Outreach committee (particularly Save the Soil and ISRIC).
The meeting was very fruitful, enabling partners to create a detailed program for the entire duration of the project. The active participation of the global movement “Save the Soil” allowed the SOILS4MED project to link the project’s activities to the broader objectives set by the movement globally. The presence of ISRIC allowed the development of synergies with the SOILS4AFRICA project and other ISRIC initiatives.
The meeting was enriched by an inspiring field trip that allowed participants to touch different soil and land types, and different land uses, and discuss the importance of taking soil type into consideration in defining soil health indicators and benchmarks. Participants also enjoyed cultural visits to the charming historical center of Alghero and to a Bronze Age settlement, and to spend pleasant time and the seaside.
