WORK IN PROGRESS
Vision A Mediterranean and European research landscape where soil health is understood, monitored, and governed through genuinely integrated scientific approaches — connecting morphological, physical, chemical, and biological dimensions of soil science with territorial analysis, geospatial tools, and policy-relevant applications.
Mission The SMSL Research Unit develops knowledge and methods to increase the environmental sustainability of agricultural, pastoral, and forestry land uses, and to protect and improve soil health across diverse territorial contexts. It studies soil variability, soil-landscape interactions, and soil responses to different management practices — combining classical pedological approaches with geoinformatic and remote sensing techniques — and translates this knowledge into tools and frameworks usable by scientists, practitioners, and policymakers.
The Unit is committed to strengthening the integration between soil researchers across disciplines, generating positive outcomes for teaching, advanced training, scientific research, and third-mission activities, in alignment with the latest scientific developments and with emerging national and European policy frameworks.
