On behalf of SOILS4MED Claudio Zucca of the University of Sassari Uniss presented the work done by the project to provide ๐ ๐ฒ๐ฑ๐ถ๐๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ฟ๐ฎ๐ป๐ฒ๐ฎ๐ป ๐ฝ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐๐ป๐ฒ๐ฟ ๐ฐ๐ผ๐๐ป๐๐ฟ๐ถ๐ฒ๐ with national soil information systems that will make soil data available to support planning of sustainable land management and setting targets in land degradation neutrality, food security, and climate change mitigation.
Representing AUSO, Melissa Allan of the UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (UKCEH) shared how AUSO is working with African and European partners towards a coordinated ๐ฃ๐ฎ๐ป-๐๐ณ๐ฟ๐ถ๐ฐ๐ฎ๐ป ๐๐๐๐๐ฒ๐บ that provides reliable soil information at a continental scale.
UNCCD Chief Scientist Barron Orr called on the soil science community to translate soil information into actionable evidence for national reporting under ๐ฆ๐๐ ๐ถ๐ป๐ฑ๐ถ๐ฐ๐ฎ๐๐ผ๐ฟ ๐ญ๐ฑ.๐ฏ.๐ญ ๐ฎ๐ป๐ฑ ๐ณ๐ผ๐ฟ ๐๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ด๐ฒ๐๐ถ๐ป๐ด ๐น๐ฎ๐ป๐ฑ-๐ฟ๐ฒ๐๐๐ผ๐ฟ๐ฎ๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป ๐ถ๐ป๐๐ฒ๐๐๐บ๐ฒ๐ป๐๐, and Tatenda Lemann of WOCAT showed how soil information can support diagnosis, selection, monitoring and scaling of SLM practices.
The discussion also highlighted the value of collaboration and complementary initiatives such as SOILS4MED, AUSO, DesertNetInternational (๐๐ก๐), and WOCAT – ๐ช๐ผ๐ฟ๐น๐ฑ ๐ข๐๐ฒ๐ฟ๐๐ถ๐ฒ๐ ๐ผ๐ณ ๐๐ผ๐ป๐๐ฒ๐ฟ๐๐ฎ๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป ๐๐ฝ๐ฝ๐ฟ๐ผ๐ฎ๐ฐ๐ต๐ฒ๐ ๐ฎ๐ป๐ฑ ๐ง๐ฒ๐ฐ๐ต๐ป๐ผ๐น๐ผ๐ด๐ถ๐ฒ๐.
๐๐จ๐ฆ๐ข’s participation, facilitated through the ๐๐ฒ๐๐๐ฒ๐ฟ ๐ผ๐ณ ๐๐ด๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ฒ๐บ๐ฒ๐ป๐ between the AUSO HorizonEurope Project and the SOILS4MED PRIMA Project, demonstrates the importance of ๐๐ณ๐ฟ๐ถ๐ฐ๐ฎโ๐ ๐ฒ๐ฑ๐ถ๐๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ฟ๐ฎ๐ป๐ฒ๐ฎ๐ป ๐ฐ๐ผ๐ผ๐ฝ๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ฎ๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป in strengthening soil knowledge, advancing scienceโpolicy dialogue and translating data into action.
